Why Go Red For Women?

In the U.S., cardiovascular disease kills approximately one woman every 80 seconds.

However, education and lifestyle changes can help prevent 80% of cardiac events.

What is Go Red For Women?

Go Red For Women advocates for more research and swifter action for women’s heart health. Therefore, this year you can wear red this month and on National Wear Red Day, in addition to donating to Go Red For Women. National Wear Red Day is on February 2, 2018. Doing these things can help support educational programs to increase women’s awareness and critical research to discover scientific knowledge about cardiovascular health.

The Go Red For Women Movement starts with you. Lead by example and make the time to “Know Your Numbers.” This knowledge could save you and your friends lives. Five important numbers women need to know to take control of their heart health include the following:

  • Total Cholesterol
  • HDL (good) Cholesterol)
  • Blood Pressure
  • Blood Sugar
  • Body Mass Index (BMI)

Knowledge of these numbers can help women and their healthcare provider determine their risk for developing cardiovascular diseases.

National Wear Red Day

This year will mark 15 years since the initial National War Red Day. This day is to bring national attention to the fact that heart disease is the #1 killer of women. In addition, this day is to raise awareness of women’s heart health. If we look on all the accomplishments, tremendous strides have been made. They include the following:

  • Nearly 90% of women have made at least one healthy behavior change.
  • More than one-third of women has lost weight.
  • More than 50% of women have increased their exercise.
  • 6 out of 10 women have changed their diets.
  • More than 40% of women have checked their cholesterol levels.
  • One-third of women has talked with their doctors about developing heart health plans.
  • Today, nearly 300 fewer women die from heart diseases and stroke each day.

However, despite this progress, more work is crucial. One in three women die of heart disease and stroke each year. But what’s more powerful? Millions of mothers, sisters, daughters and friends making a change.
